Translucent and Clear Pro PCTG: Getting the Best Clarity

John Schneider

  • Clearest results: a large nozzle with thick layers in vase mode. Wider extrusion widths help.
  • Solid parts: 100% infill in a monotonic or rectilinear pattern, 3 walls at most, and 4 top and 4 bottom layers. Expect translucent, not glass-clear.
  • Cloudiness: usually printing too fast or too cold. Try 5–10°C hotter.
  • Bubbles: moisture or overheating from printing too slowly. Dry at 70°C for 8 hours, and don't slow down excessively.
  • Color darkening at corners and holes: the plastic sits in the heat longer where the printer slows down. Keep outer walls at a steady, moderate speed (around 40 mm/s).
  • Hazy first layer: comes from the textured plate. A smooth plate with glue stick as a release layer gives a clearer bottom.
  • Pressure advance: on Bambu X1-series printers, calibrate manually for clear filament.
  • FullSpectrum color mixing: translucent colors blend better because light passes between layers.
