Tough Pro PLA+ Settings for Printers Without a Profile

John Schneider

We're developing Tough Pro PLA+ profiles for as many popular printers as we can, but we can't cover every brand, model, and upgrade. If we don't have a profile for your printer, start from your slicer's generic PLA profile and make these changes.

Setting Recommendation
Nozzle temperature 230–250°C. Use the higher end for faster speeds.
Bed temperature 0–60°C. A heated bed isn't required; 45–60°C helps on PEI.
Bed surface Smooth or textured PEI, BuildTak, or WhamBam. Smooth PEI gives the best first layers.
Print speed 60–250 mm/s
Enclosure Not required
Retraction Start from your printer's PLA defaults. If you see stringing, add 1 mm at a time.

Printing fast

At higher speeds, the filament spends less time in the hot end and may not reach full temperature. Above about 200 mm/s you may need to raise the temperature about 5°C for every 10 mm/s. Test to find the sweet spot for your printer.

Why it prints hotter than other PLA

Our PLA products generally need a slightly higher temperature than less expensive PLA. Tough Pro PLA+ is made from genuine NatureWorks Ingeo 3D870, not a filled or blended resin. Treat this as a guideline, not a rule.
