Start Here: The 5 Essentials for Printing Tough Pro PLA+

John Schneider

Tough Pro PLA+ prints much like PLA, but a few habits make the difference between good prints and great ones. Get these five right and most prints come out clean the first time.

  1. Use our profile if we have one for your printer. We publish Tough Pro PLA+ profiles for many Bambu Lab printers and the Snapmaker U1. See Tough Pro PLA+ print profiles. No profile for your printer? See Settings for printers without a profile.
  2. Print hotter than generic PLA. Tough Pro PLA+ is made from NatureWorks Ingeo 3D870 and prints best at 230–250°C. A generic PLA profile set to 200–215°C is the most common reason first prints fail.
  3. Start on a clean, smooth PEI plate. We get the best first layers on smooth PEI. Wash the plate with hot water and dish soap if prints stop sticking. A heated bed isn't required, but 45–60°C helps on PEI.
  4. Keep it dry. Dry at 50°C for 6–8 hours if a spool has been sitting out, and store it sealed with desiccant. See Drying and storage.
  5. Anneal only when you need maximum heat resistance. Tough Pro PLA+ handles heat better than Standard PLA+ straight off the printer. Annealing raises it further but shrinks the part slightly. See Heat resistance.
