First Layer and Bed Adhesion Problems

John Schneider

Standard PLA+ sticks well to most PLA-friendly surfaces. When it doesn't, the cause is almost always the plate, the first-layer height, or the temperature.

1. Wash the build plate

Fingerprint oils and residue are the most common cause. Wash the plate with hot water and dish soap, rinse it thoroughly, and dry it with a clean paper towel. Avoid touching the print area afterward.

2. Check the bed temperature

A heated bed isn't required, but it makes adhesion much more reliable. We use 60°C on smooth and textured PEI.

3. Check the first layer height

If the first layer looks round and barely touches the plate, the nozzle is too high. Adjust the Z-offset or rerun your printer's bed leveling, if it supports that.

4. Check the nozzle temperature

A generic PLA profile at 200–215°C is often too cold for Standard PLA+. Try 230–240°C. See Settings for printers without a profile.

5. Refresh a worn PEI sheet

Older PEI can lose its grip. Lightly scuff it with a green scrub pad and isopropyl alcohol, then wash it.

6. Add a brim for small or tall parts

Parts with a small footprint benefit from a brim, which adds contact area.
