Fixing Stringing with Standard PLA+

John Schneider

Fine strings or "hairs" between parts usually come from a nozzle that's too hot for the speed, too little retraction, or wet filament.

Fixes, in order

  1. Lower the temperature 5–10°C. Stay within 220–250°C. If you print fast, don't go so low that the finish turns matte.
  2. Increase retraction 1 mm at a time. Print a retraction test model (search online for "retraction test model") after each change.
  3. Dry the filament. Moisture turns to steam in the nozzle and pushes out extra plastic. See Drying and storage.

Is it stringing, or supports failing?

Long, thick strands, often a full line wide, aren't normal stringing. They usually mean supports or small features printed too fast, didn't bond, and the layers above printed in midair. Slow down supports and small features instead.
