A partial clog doesn't stop your printer. It restricts flow, so prints come out worse than your printer is capable of, and it often shows up hours into a print.
Signs
- Filament curls or hooks off to the side when you extrude in midair, instead of coming straight down. This is a strong indicator of a partial clog.
- Under-extrusion or weak layers that appear partway through a print.
- Streaks of a previous color, or black specks.
- Problems that started right after a material change.
Fix
- Heat to the temperature of the hottest material you've printed recently.
- Purge with 3D Clean until it runs translucent and milky. See How to use 3D Clean.
- Extrude in midair again. It should come straight down.
