Spotting a Partial Clog

John Schneider

A partial clog doesn't stop your printer. It restricts flow, so prints come out worse than your printer is capable of, and it often shows up hours into a print.

Signs

  • Filament curls or hooks off to the side when you extrude in midair, instead of coming straight down. This is a strong indicator of a partial clog.
  • Under-extrusion or weak layers that appear partway through a print.
  • Streaks of a previous color, or black specks.
  • Problems that started right after a material change.

Fix

  1. Heat to the temperature of the hottest material you've printed recently.
  2. Purge with 3D Clean until it runs translucent and milky. See How to use 3D Clean.
  3. Extrude in midair again. It should come straight down.
