Using Standard PLA+ as a Support Interface for Pro PCTG

John Schneider

Standard PLA+ makes an excellent breakaway support interface for Pro PCTG. PCTG doesn't bond strongly to PLA, so supports pop off cleanly and leave a smooth surface. This only works on printers with a separate nozzle for each material.

Requirements

  • A multi-nozzle printer, such as the Bambu Lab H2D, H2C, or X2D, or the Prusa XL. Don't run PLA and PCTG through the same nozzle; mixing them in one nozzle causes print failures.
  • Use 3D-Fuel Standard PLA+ (or ReFuel PLA). It's pure PLA with no additives and prints at 240°C, which gives a better temporary bond with Pro PCTG. PLA+ from other brands often contains additives, and Pro PCTG may not stick to it at all.

Setup in Bambu Studio (H2D example)

  1. Download the H2D profiles from Pro PCTG print profiles.
  2. For the Pro PCTG, select 3D-Fuel PCTG Pro + Std PLA+ Breakaway Supports @Bambu Lab H2D 0.4 nozzle.
  3. For the PLA, select 3D-Fuel PLA Standard PLA+ @Bambu Lab H2D 0.4 nozzle.
  4. For the process, select 3DF PCTG Pro + Std PLA+ Breakaway Support 0.20mm Standard @BBL H2D.
  5. Set the support base to Pro PCTG and the support interface to Standard PLA+.
  6. Slice and print.

No profile for your printer yet?

Start from the H2D profile and copy its settings. Most of it will carry over with a little tweaking. If you're adapting it yourself:

  • Turn chamber heating off. PLA needs a cool chamber.
  • Disable the bridging fan override.
  • Slow the supports down: support speed 60 mm/s and support interface 50 mm/s. Supports printed too fast don't bond to the layer below, and the next layers end up printing in midair, which looks like heavy stringing.
