Matte, Rough, or Weak Prints

John Schneider

Too cold for the speed

If Pro PETG can't melt fast enough, prints come out matte and rough with weaker layers. Raise the temperature toward 260–265°C, or lower the speed or maximum volumetric speed.

Wet filament

Popping or hissing at the nozzle, bubbles, rough surfaces, extra stringing, and weak layers all point to moisture. Dry the spool. See Drying and storage.

Leftover material in the hotend

If problems started right after you switched from PLA or another material, leftover plastic may be coating the hotend. Purge with 3D Clean. See Switching materials: when and why to purge.

Weak parts

  • Print hotter for better layer bonding.
  • Orient the part so the load runs along the layers.
  • For more toughness and heat resistance, consider Pro PCTG.
