Standard PLA+ FAQ

John Schneider

What is Standard PLA+ made from?

100% virgin NatureWorks Ingeo 4043D PLA, with no fillers or stretchers. That's why it prints a little hotter than many budget PLAs.

What's the difference between Standard PLA+ and Tough Pro PLA+?

Tough Pro PLA+ is 8.8× tougher and handles heat better. Standard PLA+ comes in more colors and costs less. See Is Standard PLA+ right for my project?.

Is it compatible with the Bambu Lab AMS?

Yes. Since October 2023, Standard PLA+ has shipped on an AMS-compatible spool. If you receive an older spool, it still works in the AMS, but leave the lid open a few millimeters. See spool sizes and weights.

Do you make 2.85 mm Standard PLA+?

Not as a stock item. We can make it to order with a minimum of 100 kg per color. Contact us for pricing and lead time. See also Does your 2.85 mm filament work in an Ultimaker?

Do I need an enclosure?

No. Standard PLA+ prints on open-frame and enclosed printers.

Does it smell?

Barely. Most people notice a faint, sweet smell while it prints.

Is it safe to print indoors?

Yes, under normal use. Standard PLA+ is more than 98% polylactide resin. See the SDS for details.

How long does filament last?

As long as it stays dry. Stored sealed with desiccant, it keeps for years. See Drying and storage.

What's the heat limit?

Standard PLA+ starts to soften around its glass transition temperature of 55–60°C. For hotter environments, use Tough Pro PLA+ or Pro PCTG.

I think my spool is defective. What should I do?

See How to request assistance with a possibly defective spool. Have the lot number from the spool sticker ready.
